Born in the vibrant city of Detroit, Dominique Macklin grew up on the west side, where early challenges shaped a unique artistic journey. At the tender age of nine, Dominique was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which required a shunt placement by age eleven. This demanding health circumstance led to significant time away from school, a period that Dominique used to cultivate artistic skills. Inspired by the fabric scraps from her mother’s seamstress work, she began designing clothes for dolls, and her interest in crafts blossomed further during her mother’s tenure at a fabric store.
Dominique’s artistic aspirations took root in middle school, where she explored various media, focusing on landscapes crafted with chalk and oil pastels alongside geometric art and digital creations. High school saw her entrepreneurial spirit come to life as she designed and sold totes at yard sales, solidifying the burgeoning artist within her. Art was always a family affair, with her mother and siblings sharing creative talents, and the influence of their artistry filled the Macklin household. Her husband, also an artist, has been a significant presence in her creative journey.
At 18, Dominique Macklin entered the workforce, taking on roles in manufacturing and retail. However, after being laid off, she found herself rekindling the artistic passions of her youth, setting aside the corporate world to fully embrace her art. A love of history and storytelling drives Dominique’s work, and her pieces often weave together narrative threads with the beauty and engagement of colorful visual art.
Dominique’s creative process is marked by relentless exploration and research, ensuring her ideas are both innovative and deeply informed. Dominique has showcased her work at the Black Rose Gallery through the “Secrets of the Rose” exhibition and counts among her admirers state representatives of Michigan, who recognize the knowledge-laden beauty of her art. An artist with varied interests beyond the canvas, Dominique finds joy in cooking, sewing, and writing poetry. She envisions establishing a dedicated art space to foster a connection between creativity and community.
